Why
Because as President Obama has said, “We must
find a way to live together as one human family, if we are to solve current
global crises that demand global solutions." These include the economy,
environment, energy, employment, ethnic, enmity, education, epidemics and
more.
Because holidays are society’s most powerful
unifying tool, and because the diverse and disorganized ways we currently
celebrate New Years Day can’t possibly unite the world
Because it gives every family that worries about
our future something tangible, effective and satisfying they can do right now
to build a safer world for our children.
Because it will help to heal the divisions and
reduce the tensions developed in the US
during 2009, so that a united America
can continue to lead the world.
Because Globalfamily Day has twice received the
unanimous support of the US Congress (S. Con. Res. 138, S, Res. 582, H. Con.
Res. 317), the UN General Assembly (Resolutions 54/29 and 56/2), thirty-plus
sitting heads of state and ambassadors representing more than 2/3 of the
worlds population.
Because Globalfamily Day costs government
absolutely nothing. indeed it will stimulate the US and global economies.
Because governments can make war but recent
history clearly demonstrates that governments no longer have the power to
make peace. Peace will have to happen through grass roots family-to-family,
faith-to-faith and community-to-community connections throughout our diverse
but rapidly globalizing world.
Because Globalfamily Day fits perfectly into the
mandate for action placed on President Obama as recipient of the 2009 Nobel
Peace Prize.

How
Step 1 - Very soon, Senators Daniel Inouye and
Majority Leader Harry Reid have introduced a new Congressional resolution
asking President Barack Obama to lead the United States in celebrating
Globalfamily Day January 1, 2010 and send a special greeting to all the
peoples of the world.
Step 2 - As soon as the resolution is adopted,
accepted and announced by President Barack Obama, worldwide media outreach
will begin. A viral program using new media - aided by and directed toward -
interfaith, business, labor groups and civic organizations, supported by
participating heads of state, nations, states and cities, with a goal of
raising awareness of the holiday among perhaps one billion global family
members before the day of celebration. Neighbors can tell neighbors and
friends can tell friends. Then, next year it will grow.
Step 3 - On January 1, 2010, Citizens around the
world, led by endorsing heads of state and their families will participate in
simple 21st century style ceremonies. They will share food and pledge they
will work to solve all conflicts in the coming year through non-violent
means. The symbolic power of breaking bread is also encouraged on this day.
Families can bake bread in their own tradition or ones they may adopt, and
share their bread with friends, neighbors and those in need.
At 12 noon on January 1, 2010, all are invited to
ring a bell or beat a drum to spread the message of unity throughout the
world. Also, during the 48 hours that it is January first somewhere on earth,
people everywhere are invited to reach out, through their neighborhoods,
communities, and especially through the Internet, to send positive greetings
to all other members of our global family.
Thus, at the start of 2010, 10th anniversary of
the gathering of Israeli and Palestinian families at a West Bank Refugee Camp
to inaugurate Globalfamily Day, we can begin a new, worldwide tradition of
peace and sharing. This will be an annual global family reunion that will
hopefully continue for the next millennium or two.
